Ghost ships. 

We love a ghost show tale. It reminds me of one of my favourite movies, The Goonies. 


Now, here in Norfolk, according to local legend, a phantom Bishop's barge, manned by 28 ghostly rowers, glides silently past the village of Brundle on the 24th of June and the 18th of September every year. It is said that as the phantom barge passes by, the spirit of the bishop, blesses any ill or ailing people along the river bank, offering them healing and comfort. That's nice. 

Then there is a fleet of glowing Anglo-Saxon ghost ships famously reported passing by two fishermen on Breydon Water during the night of the 11th July 1929. These men watched as a phosphorescent fleet of Anglo-Saxon style boats glided past them, they left a large wake, yet remarkably, it did not rock or disturb the fishermen's small boat. Local folklore links the ghostly apparition to an annual re-enactment of Saxon raiders heading toward nearby Burgh Castle, or the historical landing of Saxon chief Elle around A.D. 447.

Finally, we have the Blakeney Ghost ship, a cargo vessel wrecked during a severe storm in 1709, whose fate became intertwined with the ghostly spectral dog, Black Shuck. The cargo ship was heading towards the port of Blakeney, when it was wrecked near Salthouse during this massive gale, drowning all crew members on board. When bodies were washed ashore, locals reportedly found the phantom dog, Black Shuck, lying dead next to the captain or a drowned sailor, binding the spectral hound and the phantom vessel to a sheer tragic fate. Ever since fishermen and walkers along the Blakeney salt marshes and shoreline have reportedly heard ghostly mournful cries, jangling chains, and seeing an earthly glowing vessel drifting silently through the coastal mists.
